In another development emphasising the pan-European nature of the Unified Patent Court, a section of the Central Division commences activity in Milan today. It will hear cases in IPC Class (A) (“Human necessities” without supplementary protection certificates, SPCs) which includes patents in the following categories: pharmaceuticals and medical devices, agriculture, food, tobacco, home appliances, clothing, wood & furniture, sports and gaming. However, cases involving SPCs of IPC Classes A and C (Chemistry) will continue to be dealt with by the Paris seat of the Central Division. The official inaugural ceremony will take place on 1 July 2024.
