Singapore: Examination of Companion Trademark Applications

Singapore: Examination of Companion Trademark Applications

Given the volume of trademark applications filed with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, it is no surprise that several examiners are tasked to manage and review the substantive examination of these applications. However, inconsistency in examination is consequently an issue as examination is subjective in nature and differs from one examiner to the next. In practice, applicants therefore find themselves incurring additional costs and efforts in ensuring consistency across their applications, especially if these are for similar or identical marks and goods or services.

As part of Singapore’s efforts to strengthen its position as a global IP hub, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore recently issued a circular providing applicants with an option to submit a request for companion trademark applications to be examined by a single trademark examiner.

These companion trademark applications have to be filed on the same day, for marks which are similar or identical, or for goods and/or services which are similar or identical.

Applicants should take advantage of this option to ensure their applications are not subject to unnecessary delays or inconsistent examination.
